‘Tis the season to be jolly at City Tavern

A MULTI award-winning Newcastle pub is set to serve up a whole feast of festive treats on the countdown to Christmas, with its new seasonal menu.

City Tavern at Northumberland Road will be serving up a range of traditional dishes for visitors looking to get into the Christmas spirit throughout December.

The menu, which includes options suitable for those with dairy and gluten allergies, as well as vegetarians and vegans, is offering two courses for £21.95, or three for £26.95.

Among the starters included on the seasonal menu are ham hock terrine with soused vegetables and mustard dressing, beetroot cured salmon with horseradish crème fraiche, duck liver pate with toasted artisan bread and bitter orange marmalade, and parsnip and apple soup, topped with parsnip crisps.

Mains include traditional dishes such as locally reared free-range roast turkey with winter berry stuffing, pigs in blankets, vegetables and cranberry jus, a pan-seared monk fish with crushes new potatoes and a light mussel and saffron sauce, Northumbrian lamb shank with mustard mash, vegetables and red currant gravy, and a squash, beetroot and puy lentil wellington, with olive oil mash, greens and red onion gravy.

The state-of-the-art bar, widely recognised for its Tudor style façade, is also dishing up desserts for those with a sweet tooth.

These include a traditional Christmas pudding served with figs poached in mulled wine and Beckleberry’s Irish cream ice cream, stem ginger steamed pudding served with vanilla custard, and panettone bread and butter pudding, with Beckleberry’s Cointreau ice cream.

A locally sourced cheeseboard is also available for those looking for something savoury.

City Tavern owner David King said he is delighted to launch the new Christmas menu for 2017.

“City Tavern is a magical place to come at Christmas. We decorate the entire venue and welcome both new and returning visitors with winter warmer drinks at our cosy, city centre setting.

“And now, we’re hoping that our specially-crafted Christmas menu will add that extra special touch to a festive day out,” he said.

City Tavern was taken over by Mr King early in 2014 and then enjoyed a £450k refurbishment to create a state-of-the-art bar while still retaining the venue’s historic features.
