Trading standards warns against hoax tarmac gangs

North Yorkshire County Council Trading Standards and Highways services are today warning residents and businesses in the county of the dangers of dealing with cold-calling tarmac gangs offering to fill pot holes.

Complaints have been received from the Easingwold area in the past week of cold callers claiming to be from the County Council working locally and having material left over to fill pot holes in private drives and private roads. These claims are false.

Previous incidents have revealed that these gangs frequently demand more money than the price they quote up front, once they have completed the work.

Anyone who has any information about tarmac works being offered in the North Yorkshire area or has had any works completed by cold-callers in the past month are urged to contact trading standards as soon as possible on 03454 040506 and request contact from the Investigations and Safeguarding Team.

County Councillor Andrew Lee, Executive Member for Trading Standards said: “We will do all we can to protect residents from those who offend in this area. Whilst a large amount of work is being undertaken by the Council currently to improve the road network, residents should be aware that contractors working on behalf of the Council would never approach individuals or businesses trying with the aim of selling their services.”
