Screen Shot 2015-09-18 at 16.19.53A FORMER Mayor of Middlesbrough has died aged 87.

Kenneth Johnson Hall served the Grove Hill community, where he was born and raised, as a councillor for 16 years from 1987-2003.

Mr Hall was the town’s Civic Mayor for the 1995 municipal year.

A moment’s silence was held at a full meeting of Middlesbrough Council earlier this week to allow all current councillors to pay their respects.

The Elected Mayor Dave Budd said: “Kenn will mainly be remembered as a man who was passionate about his local community of Grove Hill and who served its people for many years in many different forums.

“I would like to pass my condolences to his friends and family.”

Mr Hall, a family man married to Kathleen and a father of three, was born in 1928 in Grove Hill and was educated at Marton Grove School, leaving at age 14.

During his time as a councillor he served on the Public Protection, Leisure Services & Policy & Resource Committees and as chair of the housing committee. He was also a school Governor at both Marton Grove and St Joseph’s School.

As deputy Mayor in 1994, Mr Hall inspected and took salute of Colour and Escort of his old Battalion, 1st Battalion Green Howards.

Away from politics his main passion was for painting. He died on Saturday, September 12.

Middlesbrough Town Hall will be flying its flag at half-mast in respect until after Mr Hall’s funeral at St Bede’s Chapel at Teesside Crematorium at 11.30am on Wednesday, September 23.
