The event, organised by Friends of Redcar Cemetery, is to uncover two welcome stones in the cemetery, the first of which the Mayor of Redcar and Cleveland Cllr Brenda Forster will unveil and the second will be unveiled by Lord Zetland in memory of Vera Robinson. The welcome stones were part-funded by Scotts memorials and the Rotary Club.
Vera Robinson, a well-loved historian, was one of the RNLI’s longest-serving fundraisers who passed away last year at the age of 101.
Cllr Brenda Forster, Mayor of Redcar and Cleveland, is set to unveil the first welcome stone at ‘Snowdrop Corner’ in the cemetery at 10am. She said: “The Friends of Redcar Cemetery have worked incredibly hard to make the area a more pleasant place for grieving families to visit.
“It is an especially heartfelt occasion as we are celebrating the life of Vera Robinson, who made such an impact on our area for all those years. I am delighted there will be a lasting tribute in her honour.”
The second stone, to be unveiled in Butterfly Garden in the cemetery by Lord Zetland will be dedicated to Vera, who was awarded Freedom of the Borough in 2001.
Dorothy Ahmed, Secretary for Friends of Redcar Cemetery, said: “We would like to thank everyone for their support throughout the 10 years that we have been working in the cemetery, especially those involved in establishing the gardens and achieving a tribute to Vera.”
Improvements to the cemetery have seen a circular tree seat being fitted, flower tubs and bird boxes installed and shrubs, trees and 1,000 snowdrops planted.
With plans to plant a further 1,000 snowdrops and to carry out more improvements, Friends of Redcar Cemetery are inviting families of relatives buried at the cemetery to join them for the unveiling, and for tea, coffee and scones at the Bowling Club to hear their views.
