The Regatta took place on April 9/10 on Coatham Sands and with the yachts approaching 45mph the marshals’ safety precautions made sure spectators stayed safe while enjoying a weekend of thrilling action.
Kevin Skelton, the local organiser for British Landsailing praised local marshals for keeping everyone safe around the perimeter of the large site, supplementing the British Landsailing officials that were on hand.
Kevin said: “This national event would be impossible to stage without local support. We are very grateful to the Council who provide the means to get the cones out and manage the course. However, there are just are not enough British Landsailing personnel to marshal the long perimeter and keep everyone safe on this very popular beach. The local team is essential for the event to proceed.
“The people of Redcar are amazing. We had volunteers marshalling the perimeter who had never seen a landyacht before but they turned up to help make something special in Redcar.”
It isn’t just the organisers that were praising Redcar, it was the pilots too with many commenting that they get the best welcome in the North East and that the Coatham weekend is their favourite event of the year.
Cllr Carl Quartermain, Cabinet Member for Jobs, Skills and Leisure, said: “The fact that we’ve received such good feedback from British Landsailing is testament to the hard work of Redcar residents who volunteered their own time to make sure the Regatta ran smoothly and safely.
“This is what we need in Redcar, and along with other beach racing we can easily put the borough on the map as a unique national and even international venue.”
