Barratt Homes Yorkshire West recently welcomed some unexpected new tenants to its Salter’s Brook development in Cudworth, when a flock of Sand Martins made themselves at home on the site.

Eight pairs of Sand Martins were discovered nesting by Salter’s Brook Site Manager, James Swann, on an area of the development that had been dug for pipework. Work was immediately halted so the birds were not disturbed and Pete Wall, Dearne Valley Living Landscape Manager at the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, visited to help the team safeguard the feathery, new residents by installing protective fencing and signage.

In addition, Gary Oliver, Principal Ecologist from SLR Consulting, was invited to the development to closely monitor the situation, helping Barratt Homes to ensure the birds were able to nest undisturbed until their chicks had fully fledged.

Salter’s Brook Site Manager, James Swann, commented: “We were surprised and delighted when we discovered some early residents had moved in! As part of our ongoing partnership with RSPB, we are always looking for ways to encourage the local wildlife on our developments, so to find Sand Martins nesting was an unexpected pleasure. We stopped work in that area immediately and with the help of our local wildlife experts Pete and Gary we’re thrilled the nesting pairs have all now fledged their chicks.”

Gary Oliver, Principal Ecologist from SLR Consulting, commented: “This is an unusual site for the birds to move into as Sand Martins are usually found nesting in vertical sandy cliffs often above water. However, they seem to have made a comfortable home for themselves at Salter’s Brook, and we’re pleased a new generation of birds has now fledged!
