£3.5m Investment plans unveiled for popular Jesmond Hotel

New Northumbria HotelMAJOR expansion plans have been unveiled for one of Tyneside’s most popular hotels and restaurants including proposals for Jesmond’s first gin house.

The Malhotra Group’s £3.5m proposals for its New Northumbria Hotel will boost bed numbers at the prestigious venue by 20% and create 24 new jobs.

The proposed development will include new apartment-style rooms and lead to an upgrading of all existing hotel rooms.

Atul Malhotra, Operations Director of the Malhotra Group, said its plans for the hotel on Osborne Road, Jesmond, would result in the complete remodelling and refurbishment of the entire rear elevation of the hotel.

He said: “These exciting proposals for the New Northumbria Hotel will improve our offering at this first-class venue and help support our ambition to widen the hotel’s existing client base.

“Our aim is to further boost our appeal to families, professionals and long-stay occupants.

“We are also delighted to be creating the area’s first gin house which will offer an opportunity to relax and enjoy a friendly, sociable environment.”

He went on to say that the work on the three rear annexes to the existing hotel and restaurant will create 12 new bedrooms, including apartment style suites with kitchenettes, bringing the total number of rooms to 67.

He continued: “At the rear of Scalinis restaurant our aim is to enhance the existing hotel bar by transforming it into the brand new Jesmond Gin House.

“This will also lead to the installation of a balcony to the front of the New Northumbria Hotel showcasing the Jesmond Gin House.

“Our programme of internal refurbishment and upgrading of hotel rooms will enhance the client base with the aim of attracting more corporate, business and professional clientele, particularly for longer stays.”

The Malhotra Group has appointed the Newcastle office of national planning, design and economics consultancy Nathaniel Lichfield & Partners (NLP) to take forward the planning application on its behalf.

NLP and the Malhotra Group are hosting a consultation event to allow the public to view their plans and to hear more about the proposals.

Ian Kettlewell, Planning Director at NLP, said: “The proposed application will include ‘green walls’ to replace the existing timber fencing and enhance the visual appearance of the scheme for the benefit residents living nearby.

“These works will provide a more consistent building line, improved external walling, secure bin storage and new screening to remove any unsightly clutter, creating a cleaner environment for neighbouring residents.”

The public consultation event will take place on 3 August from 4.30pm until 8pm at Jesmond Library, St George’s Terrace, Newcastle upon Tyne NE2 2DL .

Following this a planning application will be submitted to Newcastle City Council and if successful, work will start in early 2017.
