STUDENTS Maisy Griffiths and Rebecca Moreland were made up when they won a highly coveted regional hair and beauty competition.
The girls were among a 22-strong Middlesbrough College team who competed at
the North East heat of the Association of Hairdressers and Therapists (AHT) Competition at the Federation Brewery, Gateshead.
Ten colleges took part in the North East heat and students were called on to display skills in 13 sections, including classical make-up, blow dry, men’s commercial cut and finish, ladies evening style, ladies freestyle event and commercial nail art.
Maisy, 16, and model Rebecca, 18, both Level 2 Hair and Media Make Up students at Middlesbrough College, demonstrated exceptional body art skills in response to a Las Vegas style brief.
They were among 18 Middlesbrough College students to be awarded first, second, or third places in their chosen categories, making it a record year for the college.
Middlesbrough College won first places for body art, gender transformation make up application, face painting and a six-strong team event, while narrowly missing out on winning first place for team bridal and 1980s make up.
The hugely creative Hair and Media Make Up students along with the talented stylists who train at the college’s Francesco Hairdressing Academy now hope to be crowned UK winners when they compete at the National Finals in Blackpool on March 14th 2016.
Zoe Lewis, principal and chief executive, said: “This competition is the biggest of its kind in the North-East so to be awarded so many first places is absolutely fantastic.
“The competition gave our students an excellent opportunity to demonstrate the skills they are being taught by highly qualified industry experienced trainers and we wish them all the best as they head to Blackpool for the national finals.”
