A top North East procurement organisation has been recognised at the 2014 Building and Engineer Awards for a project that saw an area of derelict land in Grove Hill, Middlesbrough turned into an environmentally-friendly community facility.
NE Procurement worked alongside Erimus Housing, a partner in the Thirteen Group, Middlesbrough College and Groundwork on the Jellystone project, where they created a training centre for the college’s first ever horticulture students as well as community allotments. The project was awarded the 2014 Sustainable Project of the Year award.
Around 17 students a year will use the new facility as their training base and local residents will be able to get help and advice on running the allotments from students and staff at the centre.
The judges said they were ‘bowled over’ by the project, which had ‘transformed’ the site.
Rod Brasington, Chief Executive at NE Procurement, which contributed £32,000 to the project through its Future Sparks Regeneration Fund, said: “We are delighted to have won such a respected award. We were up against several reputable organisations that do some remarkable work and this recognition is proof that we really can achieve more when working together- the premise of our whole business.”
The awards, which are now in their tenth year, see the best and brightest of construction industry come together, and reward the stand-out achievements from the past 12 months. The category saw the collaboration compete against several national organisations including Celtic Technologies, Halton Borough Council, Mitsubishi Electric and NHP Leisure Developments.
Brian Dinsdale, chair of Erimus Housing, said: “We put a lot of thought into the Jellystone project, and worked closely with residents to make sure it was a valuable addition to the area. To see it recognised in this way is an acknowledgment that our partnership with the community will continue to pay off for many years to come.”
