YOUNG historians were transported to the trenches as the nation prepares again to mark 100 years of the war to end all wars.
Year 9 students at Richmond School and Sixth Form College wore 1914-18 period military uniforms and helmets and examined ordinance from World War I as part of a project with a regimental museum.
In the run up to next month’s Remembrance Sunday, Green Howards Museum education officer Carl Watts visited the school bringing a host of English and German memorabilia for students to examine.
“The aim is to encourage students to appreciate the very close links Richmond and the Dales had with the Army, appreciate those relationships today,100 years on and how it affects the area.”
Lead teacher for history Sophia Mawer added: “It is an incredibly powerful session, particularly as some of the kit contains bullet holes. It really makes the students think about the consequences of war and it gets them asking questions of their family and those who served their country, many heroically.
“Last year when we were looking at the First World War it prompted some incredible family war tales of heroism about the students’ great grandfathers so we are looking forward to hearing about what they discover this year.”
