The gym at North Tyneside’s busiest leisure centre is set to reopen this weekend following thousands of pounds worth of investment.

Located on Whitley Bay’s seafront, the Contours gym at Waves will open to the public tomorrow (Saturday 30 April).

New equipment has been installed, including cardio machines and free weights, as well as the gym floor replaced.

Paul Youlden, senior manager for sport and leisure at North Tyneside Council, said: “Each year, we welcome more than 470,000 visitors to Waves.

“With such popularity, some wear and tear is inevitable, which is why it’s important we invest in site and ensure it remains a first-class facility.

“On behalf of the council, I would also like to thank the public for their patience while the work was carried out.”

In total, £300,000 is currently being invested by North Tyneside Council at Waves, with improvements also underway to the roof and the airflow within the building. The pool will remain open throughout the project.

Waves is one of the council’s five leisure facilities – the others include Tynemouth Pool, The Parks, Hadrian Leisure Centre and The Lakeside Centre.
