A young photographer’s stunning shot of a blue tit will take pride of place in North Yorkshire Youth’s calendar.  The image, taken by Cameron Smith, a Year 10 student at Richmond School and Sixth Form College, caught the eye of the judges for its fantastic composition and sheer beauty and it will be the opening shot of the calendar.

Fourteen-year-old Cameron entered the competition after seeing a post shared on the school’s social media. He took a number of photographs but the blue tit was his favourite. Cameron said: “I am really interested in photography and this was a great opportunity to head outdoors and take shots of the beautiful countryside and wildlife.  Living in Richmondshire, we are really spoilt for choice as there are so many outstanding views and landmarks. However, it was the wildlife that appealed to me and I was just so very lucky to catch the blue tit at exactly the right moment.”

Jayne Shackleton, Youth Participation Worker at North Yorkshire Youth, said: “We had a fantastic response to our competition and the quality of images received from all the young people across North Yorkshire who entered was staggering. It has been really interesting to hear the stories behind the photos, see favourite views, photos connected to memories and some of the things young people have been doing to boost their wellbeing during the lock down period.

“The judges were really impressed with Cameron’s photograph and had no hesitation in selecting it for January’s opening shot. The competition has been so successful that we will be making this an annual event.”

North Yorkshire Youth (NYY) is a charitable organisation founded in 1941 to provide opportunities for children and young people to learn and grow through supporting youth work in North Yorkshire communities. NYY also deliver adventurous activities from Carlton Lodge Outdoor Centre in Thirsk and offer training opportunities for young people and those who work with them.

Calendars are available to purchase at £10 (+59p postage) and can be ordered by emailing annalisa@nyy.org.uk

Jenna Potter, Headteacher, said: “Cameron’s photograph is outstanding, it really captures the beauty of the blue tit and is perfectly framed by the holly berries. I am looking forward to seeing more of Cameron’s work.”
