COLLECTING clothes really took off at a North school which has handed over 90 bags of old uniforms to charity.
The Friends of Barnard Castle School donated the clothing to the Great North Air Ambulance to keep the valuable service airborne.
“We operate a shop for used clothing but the uniforms were redundant because they carried the old badge,” said Julia Greaves, of Barney Friends Senior School.
“We were just really pleased to find a use for the clothing that will help people across the region should they ever need the help of the Great North Air Ambulance.”
Isla Hewitson, 17, of Barnard Castle, Jessica Frankland, 16, of Richmond, and Stella Nichols, 17, of Richmond, helped load the bags into the Great North Air Ambulance collection van.
Isla said: “It is such a great cause as the air ambulance is something any of us could need at any time in the future and it makes a real difference to people’s lives.”
The uniforms will be sent to Europe where they are sold in shops raising valuable funds for the service.
Mandy Drake, head of fundraising at the Great North Air Ambulance, said: “We’d like to thank everyone who helped make this possible.
“Used clothing is a vital source of income for the charity and over the years has paid for hundreds of missions flown by our helicopters. These clothes will help us continue our work in the region.”
