Stanley town is looking blooming great and ready for a regional competition after the community came together for a partnership planting scheme.
As part of the project, Durham County Council teamed up with Stanley Town Council, Stanley Area Action Partnership (AAP), Derwentside Homes, South Moor Partnership, Well-being for Life, and the Community, Horticultural and Planting Society (CHAPS) to get ready for the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Northumbria in Bloom competition.
The event, which took place on Thursday 2 June involved volunteers and Durham County Council’s Clean and Green and Civic Pride Teams planting up the large curved planter at the top of Front Street with the words ‘Stanley in Bloom.’
Stanley residents also had the opportunity to enter Stanley Town Council’s ‘Blooming good fun’ competition, where Mrs Maureen Smith from East Stanley won a flowering tub.
As Stanley is blooming from all the work of volunteers and partners, the town is now ready to welcome the judges next month as they take part in the ‘Town’ category of the RHS Northumbria in Bloom competition. Last year, Stanley won silver as a first time entrant.
Daniel O’Brien, Stanley AAP co-ordinator said: “It’s fantastic to see people come together for such a great project. Everyone has worked hard to ensure that Stanley is ready for the judges next month.
“The judges will be able to see how much hard work has gone into our entry and will see we’re strong contenders for the competition.”
Results of the RHS Northumbria in Bloom will be announced in autumn.
