All Aboard! Lumo takes prime spot in Newcastle and Gateshead’s new Monopoly game

A brand-new official ‘MONOPOLY: Newcastle and Gateshead Edition’ game launches this week featuring a range of iconic landmarks and organisations, including Newcastle-based train operator, Lumo.

In addition to securing the famous spot typically occupied by London King’s Cross Station, Lumo’s London terminus, the Newcastle edition sees Lumo proudly occupying Newcastle’s iconic Central Station. Lumo also takes pride of place on the front cover of the popular board game, showing one of the operator’s 100% electric trains crossing the River Tyne.

With 96% customer satisfaction scores, it’s no surprise that Lumo was the train operator selected by MONOPOLY for the new edition, with the company becoming a significant part of life in the region, offering customers a sustainable, all-electric rail service that connects the North East with London and Edinburgh and redefines eco-friendly travel options.

The board, which features bespoke property spaces including The Glasshouse, Grey’s Monument and Baltic Centre is now on sale ready for Christmas. A series of launch events took place including at Newcastle Central Station, with Mr. Monopoly boarding a Lumo service.

A Newcastle and Gateshead MONOPOLY game was previously launched in 1999, to great acclaim, although it was discontinued years later. John Keen-Tomlinson, Custom Games Executive at Winning Moves UK, said: “This is a new board for a new generation.”

When it was announced earlier this year that Newcastle and Gateshead were getting a brand new 2024 version of MONOPOLY, the public was invited to share suggestions for landmarks and organisations to feature. “We were wonderfully spoilt with choices when putting this MONOPOLY board together,” adds Keen-Tomlinson.

The special edition features the movers and shakers of Newcastle and Gateshead, from the iconic St James’ Park to Newcastle’s popular night life spot, Bigg Market. Several charities feature too, including The Alan Shearer Foundation, St Oswald’s Hospice and the Newcastle Dogs & Cat Shelter.
