Stanley town centre is set to give judges a blooming great welcome as it’s judged in a regional competition.
The Stanley in Bloom group is hoping to follow on from last year’s silver success in the town category of the Royal Horticultural Society Northumbria in Bloom competition.
Making up the In Bloom group are Durham County Council Clean Civic Pride and Green and Clean teams, Greenland and St Josephs RCVA Primary Schools, Community, Horticultural and Planting Society (CHAPS), South Moor Partnership, Durham Agency Against Crime Haggrid group, Derwentside Homes and Stanley Town Council.
On Friday 8 July, judges will visit the town and assess the hard work of the volunteers. This includes a ‘Stanley in Bloom’ planter on the Front Street, designed and installed by volunteers, raised beds created by the local primary schools on their own premises and the Haggrid group who revitalised the planters at bungalows in East Stanley.
Their route will start at Greencroft Industrial Estate, then, the judges will move on to South Moor, East Stanley and finally finishing at Front Street.
Stanley in Bloom has encouraged the community to get involved in photo competitions organised by Stanley Town Council and also Durham County Council’s social media photo competition #HiddenGem.
Pauline Walker, Durham County Council’s senior civic pride officer for neighbourhood services, said: “It’s great to see the community pull together on such a great project that influences the way the town looks.
“Last year Stanley won silver in their first entry so we’re hoping we can impress the judges just as much this year.”
