Precision Printing has proudly serving the print industry since 1966. As a way of commemorating this momentous occasion, their team is sharing their insights into their professions and industry. Here we have a Q&A with General Manager, Lauren Garrison.
What is your role in the business?
My role within the business is split into two sectors: Sales and General Management. As a sales person, I have a target of 1.67 million this year. Under my General Manager role, I manage the Account Managers, Studio and Reception Staff.
How long have you been working with Precision? What career path led you to where you are now?
Starting my career in print 11 years ago when I joined RRD, I started as an admin assistant progressing to the Digital Print Manager. After 6 years the decision was taken to close the digital room, the accounts that were ran out of RRD Huntingdon where transitioned to Precision Printing and I came with them.
What does ‘A day in the life’ of Precision’s General Manager look like?
Extremely busy, varied, and never the same day twice!
What have your career highlights at Precision been?
There have been many over the years, but the one that stands out the most is being promoted from Client Services Director to General Manager.
Have you noticed any industry challenges during your time with the business?
The demand for quicker turnarounds seems to be getting shorter by the day. I remember the days where you would get 5-6 working days to complete a job, now-a-days, it’s more like 2-3 if you are lucky.
With the industry being so competitive, you need to be forward thinkers and that’s why Precision get it right so often.
What do you wish people knew about your industry?
That it’s not just a case of pushing a button. It takes a lot of time, skill and talent, and we are fortunate to have a lot of it at Precision.
Do you have any business role models – and why?
No, I don’t actually – I am who I am today because of me. I work hard, learn and take in as much as I can just follow the long road.
What advice do you have for individuals with aspirations for a General Manager position?
Work hard and the opportunities are there, but try not to forget where you came from.
What advice do you have for people wanting to work in print?
It’s not an easy industry but it’s interesting!
You need to work hard and have an understanding that it will be varied, but when you see some of the amazing products you can create with print, you will also realise how rewarding it can be.
What do you do outside of work?
I love to bake in my spare time, there’s nothing better than someone eating one of my cakes and realising that they taste better than they look!
Finally, give us one sentence of snappy business advice…
