The latest ‘collective energy switching scheme’ has seen an annual saving of £184 achieved per registered household.

Run by national switching company iChoosr, the initiative brought customers together to negotiate a better deal for their energy bills.

After the council signposted people to the scheme, iChoosr presented all registered residents to energy providers, who took part in a reverse auction to provide the best possible tariffs.

The news comes as the council also launches a new promotion with North Tyneside Warm Zone in an effort to save residents even more money, by offering free heating improvements.

Thousands of households will qualify for full grants to pay for a new boiler, if it’s old or not working properly, new central heating installations; loft insulation; cavity wall and solid wall insulation.

Welcoming the announcements, Cllr John Stirling, cabinet member with responsibility for Environment, said: “We are committed to helping residents reduce their soaring gas and electricity costs – and we’re always looking at different ways to do so.

“Both of these schemes are so important and the collective energy results really speak for themselves. This is the third time we have promoted the scheme and I’m delighted we’ve helped to achieve such significant savings once again.

“I’m also delighted to be launching a new promotion with North Tyneside Warm Zone. We’ve worked with them since 2007, during which our partnership has delivered insulation and heating improvements to over 16,000 homes in the borough and more households are now set to benefit.

“I would encourage those qualifying households to respond to the offer.”

Letters have started to go out to those households who qualify for a Warm Zone visit and distribution will continue throughout the summer and autumn months.

Based in North Shields, Warm Zones is a not-for-profit company and has been operating in the North East for over 14 years.

If residents are in receipt of certain benefits, the company can also provide them with an entitlement review. This is free, confidential and will check if they’re claiming everything they’re entitled to.
