Ryedale District Council is focusing on litter this month and urging residents to make sure they bin their rubbish.
It’s part of the Council’s long term project to encourage pride in the Ryedale district by tackling issues such as fly tipping, waste, dog fouling and recycling, as part of the Don’t be a Waster – Reduce, Reuse, Respect campaign.
Cllr Ives, Chairman of the Policy and Resources Committee explained:
“If we all take the time to make sure our rubbish goes where it should – in the bin, we can help make sure Ryedale is litter free. Just picking up a piece of rubbish makes a huge difference to our community.
“Littering is completely unacceptable. Ryedale is one of the most attractive areas in the country and we want everyone to make where they live, work and play somewhere they are proud of by helping to keep it litter free.
“It’s about making a difference ourselves and everyone taking responsibility and working together to make where we live a better place, whether as individuals, groups or companies.”
Residents are reminded that you can report littering via the website www.ryedale.gov.uk/report-litter.html which will alert the Council’s Community Team to the issue.
Ryedale District Council is also urging residents, staff and councillors to come along to the Malton and Norton Tidy Group’s next litter pick and clean up event on Sunday 4 March between 10am and 12noon.
This tidy up event is part of a national Keep Britain Tidy “Great British Spring Clean” campaign which aims to bring people across the country together to clear up the litter that blights our towns, villages, countryside and beaches.
Everyone is welcome meeting in St Nicholas Street Car Park in Norton. Volunteers don’t have to stay for the full two hours and can drop in as is convenient. Work includes litter picking, weeding and sweeping. All bags and litter pickers are provided by Ryedale District Council but please bring your own gloves.
Antony Croser from the Group explained, “This weekend is also the Keep Britain Tidy’s Big Spring Clean so we’ll be joining thousands of other volunteers and groups across the country who are working together to make a difference and clean up the environment on our doorstep.
“In 2017 the Malton and Norton Tidy Group collected 305 bags of litter. With just a few more volunteers we can clean up even more in 2018 and cover far more ground. Everyone is welcome to come along and help – whether that is for five minutes or the whole two hours.”
