Residents living in a sheltered accommodation scheme in Middlesbrough raised a glass to celebrate the completion of a special garden make-over thanks to Erimus Housing, part of Thirteen Group.
Erimus Housing’s investment team has collaborated with Groundwork North East & Cumbria to deliver major improvements to an area of land in front of high-rise Glastonbury House in Priestfields.
The space has been boosted by a new footpath, pond area, handrails, timber planting boxes, seating areas and raised flower and plant beds.
The project was launched with a garden party where residents enjoyed a cream tea, garden games and were treated to displays including flower arranging and cooking. The residents’ gardening club was involved in the planning of the environmental improvements and gave its seal of approval at the celebratory event.
Mary Jean Forster, who is the scheme’s longest standing resident, cut the ribbon to open the garden. She said: “I’ve lived at Glastonbury House for 48 years and have many happy memories from here. It was a lovely surprise to be asked to cut the ribbon. I really enjoyed it.
“The new garden is smashing. It has made a lot of difference. The new fencing will help to keep the garden safe and secure, it’s fantastic. I hope this will encourage more residents to use in the garden in the summer, I know I will.”
Brian Dinsdale, Chair of the Erimus Housing Board, added: “The external environment is incredibly important and the older residents at Glastonbury House now have a lovely outdoor facility to enjoy.
“Working with Groundwork, and our residents, to bring considerable improvements to the environment around our properties is reaping real benefits. Being a responsible and forward-thinking landlord we look holistically at our communities and are proud of the efforts of our team, and our partners, to improve local neighbourhoods.”
Kate Culverhouse, Groundwork North East & Cumbria Chief Executive, said: “In a high-rise environment the outdoor area is even more important and we are very proud of the Glastonbury House project.
“The piece of land has been greatly enhanced and I am sure it will be much enjoyed by local people for many years to come.”
