Hopping Across The North East From Hub To Hub

An ‘axe-cellent’ approach to wedding plans

A Lake District inn has introduced a novel, lumberjack inspired sport to its wedding preparation events.

The Wild Boar Inn Grill & Smokehouse at Crook near Windermere is offering the increasingly popular art of axe throwing to its woodland games set, bringing a sharper competitive edge to its group stays at the venue.

Aimed primarily at wedding parties and corporate team build events but open to anyone, participants can learn the skilful technique of throwing an axe at a target, attempting to hit the ‘bullseye’ or get as close as possible to beat fellow competitors.

It adds to a number of outdoor activities available at the inn which include dagger throwing, archery and clay pigeon shooting all overseen by local expert Mike Coates.

“Axe throwing is a highly popular event in a lot of lumberjack competitions in Canada and the US,” explains Adam Bujok from English Lakes Hotels Resorts & Venues, the manager of The Wild Boar.

“Our aim is to provide more creative wedding experiences with our own unique outdoor style.  Using Mike’s expertise, knowledge and tuition, the axe and dagger throwing sessions bring out the gimlet eyed accuracy for participants and a real sense of competitive fun.”

A host of wedding suppliers will be featured at the Wild Boar Inn’s Wedding Showcase on Sunday 3 November from 12 noon until 4pm.  An axe and dagger throwing ‘demo’ will be included on the day, together with opportunities to sample some of the best treats that Lakeland suppliers have to offer.

Mr Bujok adds: “We already have a unique wedding venue here in the heart of the Lake District but we like to offer additional and unusual activities to bring people together in the lead up to their special day.  We started offering duck herding sessions earlier this year and the axe throwing is another new activity which is already proving popular.”
