With so much advice circulating about how best to care for our pets, it’s no surprise that some myths are still widely believed. But how well can pet owners in the North East separate fact from fiction?
A new survey from Petplan, which included over 2,000 UK adults, uncovers some surprising misconceptions shaping how people across the region care for their furry friends. The findings reveal that while many North East pet owners feel confident in their knowledge, persistent myths continue to mislead.
Top Myths in the North East
- Wagging tails = happiness: Nearly half (49%) of North East respondents believe a wagging tail always signals a happy dog, missing the wider range of emotions dogs express through tail movements.
- Licking wounds helps healing: 34% believe the long-held myth that pets licking their wounds promotes healing, despite the risk of infection.
- Cats and dogs are enemies: 31% still think cats and dogs are natural enemies, a stereotype that’s often disproven in multi-pet households.
The Impact of Misconceptions
These myths don’t just create confusion – they can influence how owners care for their pets: 18% of North East pet owners admitted they’ve adjusted their pet care routines, only to later discover their actions were based on myths. Furthermore, 19% have avoided certain foods for their pets, guided by incorrect information.
Despite these misconceptions, many North East pet owners feel confident in their pet knowledge. Over half (54%) say they’re confident in spotting myths, and encouragingly, 61% would be willing to adjust their routines if they learned their practices were rooted in misinformation.
These regional findings mirror national trends, with 49% of UK adults also associating wagging tails with happiness and 62% open to changing their routines if they discover a myth.
Petplan experts, including vet Dr. Brian Faulkner and dog behaviourist Nick Jones, stress the importance of challenging misconceptions to ensure pets receive the best care.
“There are so many myths about pets that it’s easy to see why people might be confused. From interpreting a wagging tail to understanding their nutritional needs, these misconceptions can impact how we care for our animals.
“It’s essential to look beyond the myths and really get to know our pets as individuals, understanding their behaviours and what these mean in specific circumstances. And while some myths may seem harmless, others can turn out to be costly mistakes, which is why having the right support, like pet insurance, can offer peace of mind. The more informed we are, the better we can respond to their needs and ensure their happiness and well-being.” says Petplan vet expert Dr. Brian Faulkner.
