Teesside freight logistics specialist AV Dawson has been recognised by British Steel for its commitment to Health & Safety.

The Middlesbrough-based business, which operates an onsite logistics service for British Steel at its Lackenby and Skinningrove sites, was presented with the 2017 award for Health & Safety Excellence.

The award, which is to recognise contract companies that have excelled from a Health & Safety perspective during British Steel’s shutdown period, was presented to AV Dawson’s Skinningrove team at British Steel’s safety event this month.

Vic Nicholas, British Steel Special Profiles, Health, Safety & Training Facilitator, who submitted the nomination for AV Dawson said:

“AV Dawson has a core crew of employees and also recruits from outside agencies during our planned shutdowns. A lot of effort and energy is put into pre-shutdown safety and the new agency workers are taken through a lengthy safety induction.”

In addition to operating to its own high standards of health and safety, which are officially accredited under industry-recognised health and safety, quality and environmental management systems, AV Dawson has embraced British Steel’s own safety campaigns over the years. The most recent of these is British Steel’s goal of zero harm, promoting a safe, injury-free environment.

Vic continued:

“Having completed a zero harm shut down for the fourth consecutive year, representing a total of eight shutdowns and an astonishing amount of man hours (average 2500 per shutdown), AV Dawson demonstrates consistently its drive to deliver zero harm.

“In particular, praise should go to Dan Marsden, onsite manager, Duncan Bonas, charge hand supervisor and Derek Ovington, charge hand. These guys are head and shoulders above.”

Paul McNulty, British Steel’s Plant Manager Special Profiles said:

“AV Dawson remains a professional, willing and engaged partner committed to the continued improvement and development of the safety culture, not only of its own employees but everyone working within the Special Profiles business. This award again reflects the continued good work of the AV Dawson team on site.”

Gary Dawson, AV Dawson’s managing director said:

“I’m thrilled to receive this award from British Steel. Safety is our number one value and this goes to illustrate the emphasis we place on health and safety on a practical level, every day. Both our onsite team at Skinningrove and our wider health and safety team work very closely with our colleagues at British Steel to promote good practice and this award further demonstrates the strength and effectiveness of our relationship.”
