Be Beside the Seaside – In Darlington This Summer

Screen Shot 2015-06-15 at 09.12.28FAMILIES can once again enjoy a traditional beach break this summer – right at the heart of Darlington.

For the third year running, business improvement company Distinct Darlington is turning the town’s Market Square into an urban beach, with fun and games for visitors of all ages.

Darlington by the Sea, which will take place between Friday 24 July and Thursday 6 August, offers the chance to take part in creative workshops, watch live entertainment and enjoy a number of nautically themed activities.

At the heart of the action will be a sandy ‘beach,’ complete with deckchairs, and traditional seaside entertainment, in the form of Punch and Judy shows, will take place on 27 and 30 July and 3 and 6 August.

There will also be street theatre, from All at Sea, on Saturday 25 July and the Giant Seagulls on Saturday 1 August and the chance to take part in arts and crafts activities, with Scrap Studio, on Wednesdays 29 July and 5 August.

Pint-sized pirates will be able to search for doubloons in a treasure hunt throughout the town centre, while fairground stalls and ice cream vans will be making regular appearances at the Market Square.

The outdoor cinema is also set to return on Fridays 24 and 31 July, with three big screen favourites for the whole family.

“Our urban beach has become a highlight of the summer for families and businesses alike,” said Alex Hirst, manager of Distinct Darlington, which was formed to promote business and encourage a clean, safe and welcoming town centre.

“It offers great fun and entertainment for all ages and really puts a spring in everyone’s step. “
