Screen Shot 2015-10-22 at 16.05.53BEDLINGTONSHIRE Golf Club has hit a hole-in-one after winning a top regional prize in Miller Homes’ popular Summer of Sport competition.

Bedlingtonshire Golf Club, which aims to provide a safe and friendly environment for children to learn and develop their golf skills, beat stiff competition from various clubs across the North East to pick up a prize of £500 in the regional round of the initiative.

Judges were looking for examples of how the sporting clubs in each community would make the most out of the donation, how the cash boost would directly support the learning and fitness of its members and specific examples of how the money would be used.

The judging panel, which included Paralympic gold medallist Josef Craig, agreed that Bedlingtonshire Golf Club were worthy winners in the North East for their efforts in inspiring youngsters to develop a passion for golf, encouraging friendships to grow with likeminded children, with the vital funding being used to provide a golf youth club to the community at no cost to the users.

Josef said: “Miller Homes’ Summer of Sport competition is a great opportunity for local sports clubs to benefit from vital funding. It’s so refreshing to see that Bedlingtonshire Golf Club is putting its efforts into attracting young people into the sport, as golf is often associated with the older generation. The club is a worthy winner and I wish them the best of luck for the future.”

Bedlingtonshire Golf Club’s Mark Sanderson added: “We are delighted to have won the Miller Homes Summer of Sport competition. The money will be a great asset to the Junior Development Club and will help to provide children from around the region with a fantastic opportunity to try out golf.”

The award winning UK housebuilder initiated the campaign this summer for the fourth year running on the back of successful competitions hosted in previous years.

Andrew Somerville, Miller Homes North East’s regional sales manager, said: “We are pleased that so many sports clubs in the North East took the time to enter this year’s competition and are delighted to support those organisations in the communities where we operate, as they provide fantastic opportunities for people to participate in activities which promote positive health and wellbeing.

“Bedlingtonshire Golf Club is a great example of this and it’s wonderful to hear about the positive impact this funding will have on their club.”
