The UN Global Compact is the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative with over 12,000 signatories in 170 countries. Biochemica, which specialises in water and wastewater treatment services and chemicals, has taken this bold step to ensure it remains at the cutting edge of CSR within the chemical sector.

Managing Director at Biochemica, Dave Ruddy said: “Corporate sustainability begins with a company’s value system and an ethical approach to doing business. Biochemica has a strong set of core values which underpin our strategies, policies and procedures to unite and focus our business in achieving our goals. Many of our existing core values are parallel to the Ten Principles, so it was a natural fit for us to declare our commitment. ”

The Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact lay out universal principals on human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption which participant companies must align their strategies and operations with. These are derived from: the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Labour Organisation’s Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work, the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development, and the United Nations Convention against Corruption.

The UN Global Compact states that companies incorporating its principles into their ethos and establishing a culture of integrity are not only upholding their basic responsibilities to people and the planet, but also setting the stage for long-term success.

Dave added: “Our existing and prospective client base – and especially those within the public sector, wants to see that we are fully embracing social responsibility and supporting our local community. As the first water management company in the UK chemical sector to make a pledge to support these principles, we will strive to set the industry standard and lead the way in delivering value across society. ”

Biochemica had already proved its dedication to CSR prior to making its pledge to the UN Global Compact through various environmentally responsible and community benefit projects. These included the launch of specialist eco-friendly division, Ecochemica and the installation of sustainable environments for local wildlife at the company’s headquarters such as a butterfly garden, hedgehog house and fox feeder area.

To further demonstrate its commitment, Biochemica will report annually on its CSR efforts and engage deeper within the communities local to its headquarters in Teesside.
