Darlington Building Society in Cockerton is supporting a local summer reading scheme for children across the area.
The Summer Reading Challenge is a national scheme for 4-11 year-olds encouraging them to continue to read outside of term time, challenging the children to read a book a week during the summer holidays.
To celebrate its 160th birthday, Darlington Building Society is extending its community support even further with a number of donations, fundraising events and volunteering days given by the different branches over the course of 2016.
The Cockerton branch has donated £250 to help fund the ‘Cute and Fluffy Animal Show’ that will take place during October half term for the children who successfully complete the reading challenge.
All children who receive a Gold Ticket will be eligible to visit the ‘Cute and Fluffy Animal Show’ or the ‘Feathery Friends Falconry Show’. To get a Gold Ticket children need to visit any three of Darlington’s libraries three times over the summer holidays. On each visit the child will need to borrow at least two books and on their third visit they will be rewarded with their Gold Ticket.
On each visit to the libraries children will also receive further incentives and cards to collect.
Jayne Tomlinson, Cockerton Branch Manager, said: “We are delighted to be supporting such a fantastic cause; the scheme is such a great way to help keep youngsters motivated and learning during the school holidays, something that can be challenging at times.
“Darlington Building Society shows continual support for the local community and everyone at the branch puts their all into any fundraising events and causes we support.”
Suzy Hill, Bookstart and Library Literacy Coordinator for Darlington Libraries, said: “We are so grateful to Darlington Building Society for its donation and support to our summer scheme. It is so important for children, especially little ones, to continue to develop their literacy skills during the school holidays. Our scheme allows them to choose books that interest them and they will enjoy.”
To add to the societies work with Darlington Libraries the Cockerton branch are hosting a ‘Meet the Author’ event. The event will involve three local authors; Sheila Quigley, Eileen Wharton and Kerry Richardson which will be hosted on Wednesday 13th July at 1pm at Cockerton Library.
