BW Medical Accountants appoints practice management consultant

Specialist medical accountancy firm BW Medical Accountants has expanded its service provision by appointing experienced primary healthcare professional Jonathan McCutcheon as a Practice Management Consultant.

The move comes in response to the rise in the demands placed on GP practices and will allow the Gosforth Business Park based firm to supplement its financial expertise in the sector with some of the wider issues in primary care now faced by practice managers, GPs and other GP practice staff in running their practices.

The specialist firm has shown strong growth since its inception in July 2013 when it was launched by Blackett Walker wealth management founders Kevin Walker and Richard Blackett with medical finance and business accountant Keith Taylor at the helm.

BW Medical provides specialist accountancy, tax and NHS Pension advice to over 100 GP practices and an expanding portfolio of more than 1200 healthcare professionals including GPs, hospital consultants, hospitals doctors, dentists and GP Federations, across England. With Jonathan’s appointment, in the last year alone the firm has now taken on eight staff bringing the total to 21.

Keith Taylor FCA Director of Medical Services at BW Medical said: “I have worked with Jonathan on numerous occasions and know that the GP practices he has been involved with have always had their financial position and operating efficiency improved through his expert approach.

“I am convinced that not only will our existing GP practice and healthcare clients benefit from Jonathan’s informed consultancy work, but our highly trained specialist staff will also benefit from his understanding of primary care; hard won insight of how GP practices operate in the modern ever-changing healthcare economy.

“It’s an exciting time for our business and Jonathan’s role will provide a key area of growth supporting our existing clients and generating new ones. Because of our medical focus and specialist services we anticipate increasing national demand for our expertise.”

Jonathan has witnessed firsthand huge change since embarking on a career in primary care 20 years ago, 10 of which have been spent in practice management roles that include Seaton Park Medical Group, Brunton Park Health Centre and Benfield Park Medical Group.

Jonathan McCutcheon Practice Management Consultant for BW Medical said: “The primary care landscape is changing rapidly, issues such as tightening NHS budgets and increasing bureaucracy at a time when GP practices are struggling to maintain service provision have led many practices to breaking point.

“GP practices need to modernise business practices and / or consider merging / partnering in whatever form with other practices if they want to continue operating in the emerging primary care environment. Practices must seriously think to pooling resources, infrastructure and operating day to day in a more financially sustainable way.

“NHS England and the Clinical Commissioning Groups form part of a system of checks and balances throughout England to ensure GP practices are operating in a clinically safe and financially sustainable way. The current healthcare economy if properly understood and engaged with offers opportunity for GP practices to develop.

“I am thrilled to be working with BW Medical Accountants to offer bespoke services to GP practices wanting to secure a successful future in the modern NHS landscape. Here at BW Medical we can offer help and support to practices on a wide range of business issues from financial management to strategic business planning.”
