Campaign to raise alcohol awareness

Redcar_and_Cleveland_Borough_CouncilAS PART of alcohol awareness week, people across Redcar and Cleveland are being encouraged to think about the way they consume alcohol.

The awareness week, which has been organised by Alcohol Concern, runs from Monday 16 to Sunday 22 November and aims to get people talking about the health risks and social problems associated with alcohol.

The council is promoting a number of key messages and information each day using social media, such as alcohol and cancer, Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, recommended alcohol guidelines as well as promoting the benefits of Dry January.

Cutting back on alcohol saves money, can help with losing weight and getting a better night sleep, as well as reducing the risk of developing health problems, such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

Councillor Lynn Pallister, cabinet member for health and housing, said:

“We’re asking people to consider the impact alcohol has on their health, finances, friends, family and colleagues and if they require information, advice or support on any of these issues, they can contact Lifeline on 01642 481032.

“Increasingly people will drink in the privacy of their own homes, yet they don’t realise they are drinking over the recommended amounts of alcohol and as such could be putting their long term health at risk.”
