Castles & Coasts to host sheltered housing open day

Local housing provider, Castles & Coasts Housing Association (CCHA) is opening its doors in Gateshead this month to help people find out more about sheltered housing.

From 10am until 3pm on Thursday 14 September Brownsea Place in Sheriff Hill Gateshead, will be hosting a special open day.

Built in 1991, Brownsea Place is comprised of 36, 1-bedroom flats for the over 55s. The accommodation provides  safe and secure facilities  and allows residents to live independently in their own flats, whilst still having the support of a Scheme Officer, who manages the day to day running of the scheme as well as checking on the wellbeing of residents.

The scheme also has a communal lounge and an outside patio with landscaped gardens where residents can meet and enjoy social events, as well as a laundry and guest facilities, with access to a community alarm service, which is available 24 hours a day 365 days a year to respond to emergency situations.

Karen Vickers, Sheltered and Supported Manager at Castles & Coasts Housing Association, said: “We are delighted to be able to open our doors to the public and to help people find out more about what sheltered housing has to offer. Although Brownsea Place is for the over 55s, everyone of any age is welcome to attend the open day, whether they are looking for accommodation for themselves, or for family members or friends who may be struggling with the upkeep of a larger home, or  feeling socially isolated and in need of some security and additional support.

“There will be a number of staff from the Sheltered and Supported Team attending on the day to answer questions and provide help and advice, as well as providing refreshments including homemade soup, tea, coffee and biscuits. Anyone who brings a friend over the age of 55 will also be entered into our prize raffle.”

CCHA has invested heavily in its sheltered stock over the last few years, modernising and improving bathrooms, kitchens, and installing upvc doors and windows.

The Association also has other sheltered housing schemes in Gateshead, including Cragside Court, Lobley Hill, and Castle Close and Tindale Drive, Whickham, as well as sheltered schemes in Sunderland.
