Collections will return to normal on Tuesday 12 January.

Sunderland residents are also urged to recycle all they can over the festive period.

Councillor Michael Mordey, Portfolio Holder for City Services at Sunderland City Council, said: “Our residents are fantastic at recycling but there’s always more that can be done. There’s a huge amount of additional waste at this time of year, and you can recycle many  of the items which we’ll be seeing plenty of over the coming weeks.”

Nearly all food and drink packaging, tins, cans, bottles and jars can be recycled in your blue recycling bin, as well as aerosols and flattened cardboard boxes.

Christmas cards made from card only, without glitter or foil on, can be recycled in the main body of the blue bin. Cards with glitter or foil on can’t be recycled.

Newspapers, magazines, envelopes and junk mail can be put into the black caddy within your blue bin for recycling.

Please note, wrapping paper currently cannot be recycled

Christmas trees can be recycled at Household Waste Reception and Recycling Centres during normal opening hours.
If you can’t get your tree to a recycling centre residents could book a bulky waste collection. There is a £15 charge for this, but as it covers up to eight items, residents in the same street could join together to have eight trees collected from one location for one charge.

If you have extra recycling, please take your items along to one of the Household Waste Reception and Recycling Centres, at Beach Street in Deptford (closed Christmas Day and New Year’s Day) or Campground in Wrekenton (only closed Christmas Day)
