Christmas tree lights switch on for Chester-le-Street

Residents of Chester-le-Street can get into the festive spirit this week as the town’s Christmas lights are turned on.

The Chester-le-Street and District AAP Christmas tree lights switch on will be held in the Market Place between 4.15 and 5.15pm on Thursday, 30 November.

Writer and director Maxie Peters, who has starred in pantomimes across the region, will host the event while the winners of a colouring competition organised by the Chester-le-Street and District Business Association will help turn on the lights.

Music groups Churches Together and North Road acoustic trio will also perform during the evening.

The event also gives people the chance to start their Christmas shopping thanks to late-night opening arranged by the Business Association.

Mick Rodgers, chair of the Development of Chester-le-Street Town task group, said: “Christmas is a time for communities to get together and we would encourage everyone to come and enjoy the lights and performances on offer.”
