City TavernAN AWARD-winning Newcastle bar has created a special menu for its veggie visitors.

City Tavern at Northumberland Road, Newcastle has expanded its food offering to create a menu of starters, mains, desserts, Sunday lunches and bar bait for its vegetarian guests.

The new vegetarian menu complements City Tavern’s regular menu of British pub classics, which also includes gluten free and vegan options.

Among the dishes featured on the new menu at City Tavern are bubble and squeak with chilli ketchup and cider gravy, veggie steak and ale pie with creamed tatties or hand cut chips and a gooey flourless chocolate brownie.

The state-of-the-art bar, widely recognised for its Tudor style façade, is also serving up a range of bar bait including artisan bread and house olives, local cheese planks with homemade vegetarian “bacon” jam and cheesy Mexican bean chilli chips.

“We recognised that there was a huge demand for vegetarian dining and wanted to ensure we supplied our guests with a large variety of meat-free dishes to choose from, which sit comfortably next to our existing menu,” said City Tavern owner, David King.

“The new menu is very much tailored to the city’s vegetarian visitors so, whether people are popping in for a quick bite at the bar or enjoying a leisurely catch up with friends, there’s plenty to fit the bill and the occasion.”

The new menu will sit alongside City Tavern’s existing menu with dishes including salmon vodka cream linguine, 10oz aged Northumberland rib eye steak and homemade spiced fish cakes.

City Tavern was taken over by Mr King early in 2014 and then enjoyed a £450k refurbishment to create a state-of-the-art bar while still retaining the venue’s historic features.
