Committee to review GP services in South Tyneside

South Tyneside Council largeAccess to GP services in South Tyneside will come under the spotlight when an influential Select Committee meets next week.

The People Select Committee is in the process of setting up a Scrutiny Commission to look at the issue of access to GP services within the Borough.

Committee members will use next week’s meeting to decide what the commission should focus on and who should be asked to provide evidence.

Councillor John McCabe, Chairman of the People Select Committee, said: “Access to GP services is high on our agenda. We understand the importance of our residents being able to get the medical help they need within their local area.

“As a council we want to ensure the quality of GP service provision. We will look at what we can do to help ease pressure on local GPs and improve access as well as the overall health and wellbeing of the Borough.”

The Committee will also receive an update on the progress and performance of South Tyneside Council’s Welfare Support Service which will outline a number of changes that the service has introduced.

Members of the press and public are welcome to attend the meeting, which takes place at 10am, on Tuesday 12 July in the Council Chamber at Jarrow Town Hall.
