Council staff raise funds for the soldiers charity

service charity cheque presentationStaff from Richmondshire District Council raised £197 for the Army Benevolent Fund – The Soldiers Charity to celebrate Armed Forces Week.

They held a ‘Dress Down Day’ and cake sale to raise money for the national charity of the British Army.

The charity was formed in 1944 when around 3 million British soldiers were at war, notably in France, Italy and Burma, but with the end in sight, the Army Board realised that the State would not be able to provide for all the needs of those who would soon return to civilian life. The Army Benevolent Fund came into force on 15th August 1944.

It pledges to give a lifetime of support to soldiers and former soldiers from the British Army, and their immediate families, when they are in need. Grants are made to individuals through their Regiments and Corps and support a wide range of specialist charities that sustain the British Army family, both at home and around the world.
