An open day for the 2020 intake of students for the BA (Hons) Professional Dance will take place at Dance City in Newcastle this Thursday (7 November) as 11 new students from across the UK and Europe embark on the next stage of their dance career on the first-ever MA in Advanced Dance Performance.

Delivered by Dance City, and supported by the University of Sunderland, this brand-new MA programme is a 43-week course based at Dance City’s brand-new studios at The Fire Station in Sunderland and in Newcastle.

The practical based qualification offers new and recent dance graduates the opportunity to develop their dance practice and technique, learn and develop choreography and perform their work. Heading up the brand-new MA Advanced Dance in Performance will be David Lloyd, a well-known and highly respected dance artist, choreographer, educator and producer.

The MA students will be part of a touring company creating exciting new work, led by David who will choreograph one of the three pieces that will be presented as a double bill, alongside original work created by the guest company Lost Dog.

“I am very proud to be part of this exciting new practical master’s course for the dance industry. Here at Dance City we are building a course to nurture talented dancers, to push them beyond their limits with the result of increasing our students earning and employability potential,” said David Lloyd, Programme Leader – MA Course, Dance City.

The MA is part of Dance City’s Training Academy which offers formal, professional, dance training at all levels starting from children aged 10 to postgraduate level. All uniquely offered within a dance house where professionals, students and the wider community mingle work together, offering a totally different learning environment and experience to other dance environments – a unique offering in dance education.

“I was really interested in improving my dance skills and to grow as a dancer. After my audition in London, I realised this was what I needed. I’m excited about all the new things I get to learn from David as well as from all of the exciting choreographers and teachers and especially from the girls I’m going to dance with. Dance City gives me so many opportunities to progress as a performer,’’ said new MA student, Eleni Antonio.

Dance City is the North East’s leading development organisation for dance and the biggest dance employer in the north of England. Established for over 30 years Dance City exists to lead and support a thriving dance ecology in the region.
