Darlington Building Society has supported a local women’s refuge with donations of equipment and a fundraising event held by staff.

The Society is celebrating its 160th anniversary in 2016 and is spending the year fundraising for many fantastic causes throughout the area, one being, The Darlington Women’s Refuge.

Members of the Customer Support Department donated 160 gifts including toiletries, children’s toys and colouring books and crayons for the residents and their children. An Easter raffle was also held and the proceeds were used to purchase children’s clothes.

The Darlington Women’s Refuge offers temporary accommodation to women and children from across the area who have left an abusive environment. They also provide a helpline for anyone who is affected by domestic abuse.

Nicki Tweddle, Customer Support Officer at Darlington Building Society, said: “Darlington Building Society is delighted to have been able to donate so much for such a worthy cause. The Women’s Refuge offers invaluable support for women and children across the local area who need a safe place to stay. We understand funding can be tight for organisations like the refuge so helping them in any way possible is vital.

“Community support is such an important part of Darlington Building Society, all of our branches and our Head Office are continually fundraising and supporting a number of deserving charities and causes.”

A spokesperson from The Darlington Women’s Refuge, said: “The Darlington Women’s Refuge Trustees, staff and residents would like to express their appreciation to Darlington Building Society for all its lovely donations, the charity is so grateful to businesses for their on-going support.”
