As part of this year’s Darlington By The Sea activities organised by Distinct Darlington, the town’s Business Improvement District, there’s a number of challenges being put in place to create some real “end of the pier” fun.
And those with a competitive spirit who want to try their hand at something different are being asked to step up to the plate and take part.
From 11am to 3pm on July 29 and August 5, Distinct Darlington will be running a number of challenges in the Market Square including a raw onion eating contest, a contest to peel and then eat a lemon and a cream cracker challenge to find the fastest time for eating three crackers.
Armed with a cocktail stick, competitors can try and beat the best time to eat individual baked beans which will hopefully give them a taste for the jelly bean challenge – eating 30 against the clock also using a cocktail stick.
The competitions are part of a whole range of activities which are helping to create the seaside spirit in the town centre, which includes fairground rides, hook a duck stalls, ice cream, bumper boats and over 40 tons of sand provided by Jewson’s.
Visitors will be able to show off their hula hoop skills, guess how many sweets in a jar and take a selfie sitting in a giant deck chair and then tweet it using the hashtag #selfiebythesea.
“Darlington by the Sea is always a massively popular activity,” said Alex Hirst, Manager of Distinct Darlington.
“Once again we’re recreating not just all the fun of the beach but all the fun of the fair, with some great contests for people to take part in.
“We’re looking forward to seeing how competitive the residents of Darlington are.”
