Newcastle based Squires Barnett Architects are celebrating a double award following their exceptional architectural design work.

Based in Plummer Tower, the team of architects have been awarded a prestigious LABC Northern Building Excellence Award in the ‘Best New Housing Development’ category…at the same time as being shortlisted for a National Housing Design Award !

SBA received the recognition for their work on the Hill Top Farm development located adjacent to Ramside Hall Hotel, just outside Durham City which has been successfully developed by Dere Street Homes, who were also recognised for their work on the project.

Louise Squires, Squires Barnett Architects, said, “The LABC  awards champion residential developments of the highest quality across the region. Durham Hill Top Farm was an exciting design project for us and we are all delighted to receive recognition for our innovative design work and also to be short-listed for a national Housing Design Award.”

The 13 homes have been designed to make the most of the superb views available over the open countryside and golf courses and to maximise the amount of light whilst also creating a sense of place and community. All the homes have large areas of window with many also enjoying double height spaces and galleried landings with many having a double length integral garage with doors at each end to create even more options for space.

Energy saving was a priority with the development with heat recovery systems taking the heat from bathroom and kitchen vented air to heat fresh air entering the homes. Under-floor heating to ground and first floors together with open fireplaces and tripled glazed windows create the best of both worlds – low energy utilisation with abundant light and fresh air with the homes.

Squires Barnett Architects is a Newcastle upon Tyne-based architectural practice founded by brother and sister partnership, Louise Squires and Warren Barnett in 2011.

Last year SBA were the only Architects north of Manchester to have projects selected for national recognition at the Housing Design Awards, the Ropery in Hexham winning a design award.

Specialising in large-scale residential, bespoke housing, conversions, residential and commercial master planning, together with both commercial and civic projects, Squires Barnett Architects have more than forty-years worth of expertise, and have worked for some of the world’s largest architectural practices in London, Sydney and home town Newcastle upon Tyne.

Recently completed projects include the Award winning Vista Development in Peterborough, the Country’s largest zero carbon housing development of 375 homes sponsored by the Homes and Communities Agency and the Westfield School for girls in Gosforth new 6th form centre.
