Durham County Council funded the work, enabling the club to upgrade its changing rooms to facilitate use by other local sports clubs. This followed the loss of community changing facilities in nearby Consett Community Sports College when the school moved to its new site as part of Consett Academy.
The scheme of work at the cricket club has created separate male and female changing areas leading directly to the playing field as well as disabled access to the club. The car park has also been upgraded to accommodate additional traffic.
The club is used on a weekly basis by hundreds of local people including cricket club members, Blackfyne Juniors FC and Blackhill Bounders running club.
Chairman of Durham County Council, Cllr Edward Bell, said: “It is fantastic to see that within the community here in Consett, so many local adults and young people are being encouraged to participate in sport and physical activity.
“The positive impact of taking part in community sports activities, both socially and to health, is well documented and we are delighted that by helping to upgrade these facilities, even more people will now be able to enjoy these benefits.”
Work at the club was completed ready for the start of the new cricket season and a future phase of work to improve the running track is now planned.
