It’s no secret that the UK is to some of the world’s most culturally rich attractions and landmarks, but which region plays host to the most?
A study by online ticketing platform TicketSource has revealed Durham to be the most culturally rich city in the North East, leaving Sunderland and Newcastle far behind.
Using data from TripAdvisor, the study explores 6771 attractions across 68 UK cities to reveal the UK cities and regions with the most culture per mile².

- Newcastle = 1.82 Culture Per Mile²
- Sunderland = 0.49 Culture Per Mile²
The Perfect Destination for a Cultural Staycation
Compared with the rest of the UK, Durham still comes close to the top of the list, only beaten by the Scottish city of Inverness, which was named the most culturally-rich city in the whole of the country.

Right in the heart of Durham’s UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Cathedral is surrounded by picturesque scenery and can be seen from the East Coast railway line. If you’re feeling adventurous, then you can climb the 325 steps up Cathedral towers and take in spectacular views of the city and the miles of the countryside surrounding it.

This 13th Century Medieval Hall and Gardens is situated just outside of Durham and is a popular wedding venue, featuring a hedge maze and stunning gardens on the banks of the River Wear. Built in 1217, the hall is one of the oldest houses in the city and is still inhabited by the original family.
Seaham Beach

Take a trip to the stunning stretch of sand at Seaham Beach for a breath of fresh air and perhaps collect some smooth pebbles of ‘Seaham Glass’. The beach has been shortlisted for 2019’s Best British Beach category by Countryfile Magazine too, so it’s well worth a visit.
