Hopping Across The North East From Hub To Hub

Easter Rising curtain on community lecture series

Screen Shot 2016-05-04 at 15.34.14The Easter Rising in 1916 is one of the pivotal moments that led to the formation of the Irish Republic. To mark the centenary year the University of Sunderland begins its Community Lecture series with a thought-provoking look at this turbulent time in modern history.

The Easter Uprising took place in Dublin and culminated in 15 men, who were identified as the leaders, executed for challenging the British Government. To some they were seen as traitors, while to others they were heroes.

Taking place on Wednesday, May 11, the talk will be given by Bernard Hope, a retired teacher who is now involved in confidential work relating to secondary schools and further education colleges.

The FREE lecture, held at the Sir Tom Cowie Campus at St Peter’s, will look at the reaction to the revolt – both from the people of Ireland and the brutal response from the Government – and how the long term result was the creation of the Irish Republic that we know today.

The University of Sunderland’s Community Lectures are open to all. Each entertaining lecture is given by authoritative speakers between May and August.

Lectures start at 2.30pm and last about one hour. There is no need to book but those attending are asked to arrive at the Prospect Building between 2pm and 2.30pm to register before the lecture begins.

There is (pay) parking in the grounds of the campus and St Peter’s Metro Station is within a few minutes walking distance. Alternatively the regular 700 bus service runs from the Park Lane Bus Station to St. Peter’s Campus itself.
