Local energy employees have raised funds and awareness for Breast Cancer Now by participating in a special fundraising event.

Customer service staff from EDF Energy in Doxford Park dug out their finest pink clothing and hosted a range of fundraising activities as part of Breast Cancer Now’s, Wear It Pink day.

Wear It Pink day is one of the UK’s biggest fundraising events, it takes place every October, during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Participants are encouraged to wear pink, the colour associated with the charity, to show their awareness and support.

Generous staff donated prizes, ran raffles, a tombola and bake sales to raise funds for the charity. In total, the day raised £943.41.

To date, EDF Energy have raised £400,000, through employee fundraising and company matched donations, since partnering with Breast Cancer Now in 2016.

Lisa Sidney of EDF Energy, who helped organise activities for the day, said: “Wear it Pink day was an excellent opportunity for us to show our support and fundraise for an amazing charity.

“Everywhere you looked people were wearing pink, it was lovely to see. I’m grateful to everyone who participated and to those who helped set up the activities.”

Breast Cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer in the UK, every year over 55,000 people are diagnosed. The charity believes that if we all act now, by 2050, everyone who develops breast cancer will live.  Funds raised for and donated to the charity go toward lifesaving research and care.

Kevin Gatens, Head of Customer Service North East said: “We had an excellent day and it was great to see everyone making an effort to support this special cause.

“Some of our staff got really creative and came into work with face paint and wigs on. As usual staff have outdone themselves with their generosity and I’m really proud of everyone who participated.”
