18528A Teesside University student has been presented with a prestigious industry award from leading engineering body, the Institution of Civil Engineers North East (ICE).

Stephen Rigg was awarded the ICE Student Prize, which recognises engineering excellence, on the back of graduating with a First Class Honours degree in Civil Engineering.

The ICE Student Prize is given to the undergraduate who is judged to have performed the best in the last two years of their Joint Board of Moderators (JBM)-accredited civil engineering course, which also includes a cash prize of £250.

The prize is awarded to the top performing student based on talent in engineering design, impressive coursework and strong performance in examinations.

Following his graduation, Stephen, 26, who is from Teesside, has been working as a Graduate Civil Engineer at AECOM’s York office since September.

He said: “I am delighted to have won the ICE Student Prize, which came as a huge shock to me and was unexpected. I worked extremely hard throughout my studies and am very grateful to my lecturers who have been very supportive to me throughout the course.

“I am now looking forward to progressing in the industry with AECOM and enjoying a long and prosperous career in engineering.”

Penny Marshall, ICE North East’s Director, said: “Stephen is a deserving winner of the award after displaying a real hunger and determination to succeed in the industry, which is reflected in his impressive grades. I would like to wish him all the very best in his career and I’m sure he will be an asset to AECOM.”
