Hopping Across The North East From Hub To Hub

Foodshare Scheme In Spotlight

A scheme which provides emergency food parcels for people facing temporary financial problems will be in the public eye later this month.

Members of the public are invited to Hambleton FoodShare’s  Annual General Meeting which will give them the  chance to find out more about the project, meet the volunteers and to get involved if they wish to do so.

Simon Farquhar from Hambleton, Richmondshire and Selby Citizens Advice will also be attending the meeting to help explore the potential impact recent changes made to the welfare benefits system will have on Foodbanks across the UK’

And for all those attending ‘Soup and a Roll’ will be served after the meeting by the FoodShare’ soup and a roll team.

The community led partnership provides a three day food parcel to people in immediate financial crisis -through unemployment, incapacity or a delay in benefit payment. The volunteer-led food store is open every Monday between 4pm and 6pm at the Zion United Reformed Church in Northallerton with a satellite scheme in Bedale.

To receive emergency food help customers must be able to demonstrate their need, primarily by being referred through an agency or by self-referral.

“Although we live in an affluent part of the country there are both individuals and families who at no fault of their own find themselves when they least expect it with no money left to buy basic food,” said Michael Webster, Chair of the Foodshare.

“Hambleton FoodShare fills that gap and continues through the huge efforts of its volunteer network to provide a much sought after service. Maybe there could be a role for you? Please come along to our AGM and find out.’”

The AGM takes place at Zion United Reform church, High Street, Northallerton on Friday 22 September at 11.30am.
