Middlesbrough Environment City’s One Planet Middlesbrough project and Bike Academy are running family Learn to Ride sessions to encourage families to get on their bikes.

The free sessions will take place in Albert Park through the week from Monday, October 27 to Friday, October 31.

Individually tailored training will be delivered by nationally qualified cycle instructors, helping riders learn a valuable skill which can help keep them fit and healthy, and save money into the bargain.

One adult and a maximum of two children can take part in the sessions – bikes and helmets can be provided, or riders can bring their own.

And on Wednesday (October 29) a Bike Fun Day at Middlesbrough Cycle Circuit will raise awareness of sustainable transport by encouraging people to cycle for fun, for travel, to improve health and save money.

Those taking part can bring their own bikes or use one of the many available at Middlesbrough Cycle Circuit, with disabled/inclusive and balance bikes available for use around the enclosed track.

Dr Bike will be on hand for basic maintenance and minor repairs and adjustments, and the Cleveland Police Crime Prevention Team will also be available to security etch bikes.

Other activities on offer include the pedal-powered Scalextric challenge, face painting and free Fairtrade tea and coffee.

Anyone with unwanted bikes can also bring them along and donate them to MEC’s bike swap scheme.

One Planet Middlesbrough Community Enabler Margaret Tonkin said: “Learning to ride from a young age gives children a skill that will last them a lifetime.

“Cycling is a fun activity that all the family can do together, as well as being an easy way to fit exercise into your daily routine.

“The Bike Fun Day is a great opportunity to bring the whole family along to learn cycle skills, try different bikes, play bike games and have fun in a safe environment with our nationally qualified instructors.”

  • The free Bike Fun Day takes place on Wednesday, October 29 from noon to 4pm at Middlesbrough Cycle Circuit, Prissick Base, Middlesbrough TS7 8AR.
