Grant helps Gateshead group reach new heights

A gymnastics group in Gateshead is jumping for joy thanks to a grant from The Gateshead Housing Company’s Community Fund.

Gateshead Team Gymnastics, which is based at The Elgin Centre in Carr Hill, Gateshead, received £2,129 for a new trampette.

The new equipment will help the children who attend the group to gain height so they can learn more experienced moves such as backwards and forwards somersaults.

The gymnastics group has been running since 2004 and aims to help young people between the ages of five and 15 get involved with the sport and train both for competition and for fun.

Marian Bailey, Chairperson of Gateshead Team Gymnastics, said: “The new trampette is used by all 97 children at the club and it is really helping them to make progress with their range of moves.

“The grant has been especially beneficial to our 55 competition standard gymnasts who were unable to make further progress without this new equipment.”

Jon Goodwin, Senior Philanthropy Advisor at the Community Foundation, who manages the fund said: “We were delighted to make this grant and help support Gateshead Team Gymnastics.

“The group provides opportunities for physical activity and socialisation in a disadvantaged part of Gateshead and is well-deserving of this grant.”

The Gateshead Housing Company Community Fund at the Community Foundation Tyne & Wear and Northumberland is supported by Gateshead Council.

Since 2006, the fund has awarded cash and in-kind grants totalling over £500,000 to more than 120 groups across Gateshead.
