Exis Technologies, a leading provider of compliance systems based in Darlington, has been recognised at a global awards ceremony for its outstanding contribution to preventing incidents in the maritime industry.

The firm, which supplies software systems for the management of dangerous goods in sea transport from its base in Faverdale, was named as one of three finalists in ICHCA International’s TT Club Innovation in Safety Award for its cutting-edge cargo screening solution, Hazcheck Detect.

Hazcheck Detect is a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solution that scans all booking details for keywords and phrases, validates against rules and highlights suspicious bookings to identify misdeclared and undeclared dangerous goods. The software has been developed to assist early intervention, allowing dangerous goods teams to question shippers, obtain further information and arrange cargo inspections.

Exis’ chief information officer Mike Durkin said: “We are absolutely delighted with the impact Hazcheck Detect is having on the identification of misdeclared and undeclared dangerous goods.

“It’s rewarding enough to see the reviews we receive from our customers, but to be recognised on an international stage, where other fantastic companies have also been shortlisted, is a really proud moment for us.

“This is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our team at Exis Technologies.”

The firm is experiencing continuous growth at the moment, with an increase in shipping lines onboarding and testing the solution throughout 2022. Now, five major carriers are using Hazcheck Detect, accounting for approximately 30 per cent of the global container volumes carried.

Mike added: “Around 40 or 50 containers a week are stopped from being loaded onto a ship thanks to Hazcheck Detect’s screening capabilities, which could have resulted in a serious incident otherwise. As the system continues to grow and evolve, we’re excited to see what the rest of 2023 has in store.”

Exis currently operates from its base on Darlington’s Faverdale Industrial Estate with a team of 26 members of staff, and recently celebrated its 35th anniversary.

The TT Club Innovation in Safety Awards were held on February 23rd, with the Exis team required to deliver a presentation about their innovation to the audience, panel members and keynote speaker.

20 companies across the industry applied to the awards, with three finalists being chosen on the night.
