A Lake District hotel group first established in 1953 is celebrating its platinum anniversary this year by giving away 70 free stays across its venues.

English Lakes Hotels Resorts & Venues, which runs Low Wood Bay Resort & Spa, the Wild Boar Inn and the Lancaster House Hotel, is marking its 70th year of operation with a host of competitions and activities to give 70 lucky winners a complimentary one-night stay.

The hotel group first welcomed guests in the spring of 1953 when Norman Buckley, a world water speed record holder and the great, great uncle of current managing director Ben Berry, set up the family run business by acquiring the lease to run the Low Wood Hotel.

The venue was already steeped in Lakeland history having first opened its doors to Lake District visitors in 1702.  English Lakes Hotels ran the venue successfully and so decided to buy the property freehold in 1958, following this up with the purchase of the Wild Boar just the following year.

Lancaster House Hotel was the group’s first green field site build and was opened in 1991.  The group has periodically owned, managed or run other hotels during its 70 years of operation.  In that time, Low Wood Bay has grown from a 30-room inn to a classic resort with over 130 bedrooms.

English Lakes Hotels Resorts & Venues managing director Ben Berry says: “It’s been fascinating to look back on the family business history and where it all started with the lease and deeds documents for the first venue we managed and then owned.

“We wanted to do something special to mark our 70th year and treat our guests to some free hospitality along the way.  The ‘70 stay giveaways’ will be awarded throughout 2023 with fun in mind via a series of competitions and quiz questions on our website and social media channels too.”

The complimentary one-night guest stays will be spread across all three venues and will be based on a bed and breakfast room booking for two people.

The first 15 winners – 5 for each venue – will be drawn from a history quiz running until the end of February. Click here to enter: https://tinyurl.com/unfhhnxx
