Hummersea Primary children visit Mayor of Redcar and Cleveland

Screen Shot 2015-12-07 at 11.35.48A GROUP of pupils from Hummersea Primary School recently visited the Mayor of Redcar and Cleveland to tour the Mayor’s Parlour and Council chamber.

Eight pupils from the school’s Student Council were given the opportunity after the Mayor, Cllr Brenda Forster, visited the primary school in October and wanted to return the invitation.

The pupils found out interesting facts about Mayoral duties and customs, and were given a brief history of Redcar and Cleveland’s Coat of Arms.

They also had the opportunity of sitting in the Council chamber as if it were a Full Council meeting.

Cllr Forster said: “I was thrilled to welcome the pupils of Hummersea Primary School, who I believe thoroughly enjoyed their visit.

“They had plenty of questions, and were an incredibly bright bunch.

“I hope the visit inspired them, and we may even have the future Mayor of Redcar and Cleveland among us!”

Peter Tyreman, Head Teacher at Hummersea Primary School said: “It was fantastic that the children had the opportunity to visit the Mayor and learn a little about how democracy works.  The children can now use their visit to inform how they run their school council.”
